Clinical Observation on the Cerebrovascular Accidents

Abstract
Clincal observations were done on 504. cases of cerebrovascular accidents treated as in-patient , at the Korea General Hospital in Seoul over a perio of 6 years from Jan. 1970 to Dec. 1975.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. Cerebrovascular accidents was fo od in 3.3% of total medical admission.
2. Of, 504 cases of cerebrovascular accidents, cerebral thrombosis was presented in 45.8%, cerebral hemorrhage in 31. 0%, subarachnoid hemorrhage in 12.7%, and cerebral embolism in 4.4%.
3. The ratio between male to female in the incidence of cerebrovascular accidents was 1.5 : 1.
4. The age distribution in cerebrovascular accidents disclosed that the sixth decade was most predominant followed by the seventh and fifth decade in turn.
5. Hypertension was the most frequent preceding disease in cerebrovascular accidents. Hypertension was -present in 66.1 % of berebrovascular accidents and in 73.7% of cerebral hemorrhage.
6. The most frequent precipitating factor in cerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage was emotional stress, whereas in cerebal thrombosis it was sleeping.
7. Among the symptoms and signs at the onset of cerebrovascular accidents, coma was present in 68.58 % of cerebral hemorrhage and headache in 60.93% of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Motor disturbance was
present in 70.12% of cerebral thombosis and in 68. 17% of cerebral embolism.
8. The electrocardiographic findings were normal in 24.5% and abnormal in 75.5%. LVH was found most frequently in 40.2% of the abnormal ECG.
9. The cerebrospinal fluid findings of cerebrovascular accidents disclosed that clear cerebrospinal fluid was found in 54.7% and bloody cerebrospinal fluid in 36.0%.
10. Of the funduscopic findings in cerebrovascular .accidents,. Grade II was found most frequently in 28 2%.
11. The recurrence rate of cerebrovascular accidents ,was 20. 0%. It was highest in cerebral thrombosis accounting for 28.6% and the next subarachnoid hemorrhage accounting for 12.5%.
12. The mortality rate during hospitalization was 17.7%. It was highest in cerebral hemorrhage accounting for 42.3% and 37.9% of those were dead within 24 hours from the onset.
